Zumba, Workouts and Anxiety

So if you follow my personal Facebook, you know that 3 things happened in the past week...
New anxiety medication (HEY-O!)
Stepping in a gym for the first time in a LOOOOONG time
and...
My first ever Zumba class!

Let's start from the beginning shall we?

So again with Facebook (I know, I know...I probably share WAY too much...whatev), if you follow me then you might have noticed that over the past month or so my anxiety attacks have been much worse. We're talking "Stevie's freaking out at her desk" bad.
So after being bad and not seeing my therapist for almost 2 months, yes TWO (which for someone with severe anxiety is just unacceptable), I made an appointment to see the ever wonderful Melissa Harrell.
After talking to Melissa, we have narrowed down that stress (DUH) and social settings are what trigger my anxiety attacks...this we already knew...what we didn't (and honestly still don't) know and/or understand is why these attacks are happening with the above situations don't apply. More than likely, it's probably stress that I'm honestly not aware of. Anywho, during my wonderful session, we decided that the medication I was only simply wasn't doing it job anymore, and since Dr. Dumbass (AKA Dr. Chengappa) refused, yes I said REFUSED, to change my medication, we simply changed Cra-Cra Doctors.
Crisis Averted.
So I saw my new Cra-Cra...his name is Dr. Attia and he's awesome. He put me on Zoloft, Klonopin and Ambien, and they. are. amazing. All of them. I have noticed that the Ambien makes me do really weird things, like super crazy FB status'. They're actually quite amusing. I have to go to my page every morning and read what I wrote because let's be honest...I don't remember for the life of me. Let me share with you my favorite Ambien-induced FB status:
I have the urge to poke the Pillsbury Doughboy belly and making him squeal....that is all.
And when a friend commented, "BAHAHAHAHA" my response was...
Don't squeal at me doughboy! I will eat you and your family!
I REALLY hope that she know I was NOT referring to her as a doughboy, but the actual doughboy. Like I said, I had NO idea I had posted this until the next morning, and I have absolutely no recollection of it, but we all have to admit...it's pretty freaking funny.

Now...onto working out for the first time in YEARS!!!
After seeing the highly disturbing HIGH number on the scale a couple of weeks ago, I decided it was time to stop complaining about my "baby weight" and actually do something about it.
***Side Note: At what point do you have to stop claiming your added pounds as "baby weight"? I say I have until Easton's at least a year old...I almost carried him for a year for crying out loud! I cooked a baby for over 9 freaking months...yes, I loved every single minute of it, but come on...give me a little wiggle room!***
Anywho, about a month ago one of my best friends here at good ole Shady J went back to Oklahoma with her brand new baby boy while her husband is deployed (and honestly who can blame her...doesn't mean I don't want her to come back NOW). I would be lying if I said I didn't go into a little state of depression for a while after she left (okay, honestly it was more like a lot before she left and a little after...). With her gone and my one other girl friend moving a hour away...who the HELL was I going to hang out with?! Cue my saving grace...a little angel named Chandler. Chandler is a new AF wife from Michigan. Her husband works with Chris, and even though I'm not replacing Jess, she's a wonderful addition to our little group! :-) Chandler actually has started to watch Easton and they are amazing with each other! One night, somehow Chan and I got on the subject of working out. I told her about a gym that was for women only, and coincidentally that's the name of it...For Women Only. I've heard wonderful things about this gym...the nursery is supposed to be one of the best in the area, they have a wide assortment of machines, they offer classes, they offer memberships with tanning AND they're are MORE than affordable! I actually know a fellow AF wife that works at the gym and was able to get Chan and I a week to try out the gym and the classes FOR FREE!!! So last night we dropped the baby off with Daddy and made our way up to the gym, which is conveniently smack dab in between both of our houses. We were both TERRIFIED! I can't count the number of times we looked at each other and said, "OMG I'm so nervous!". It wasn't the fact that we were nervous about working out because we're both pretty familiar with a gym, but the Zumba class...not so much. More on Zumba later. So the Zumba class was scheduled to start at 6:30pm, so we decided that getting there at around 5:30pm would give us a good amount of time to get everything settled with the front desk, familiarize ourselves with the gym all over again, and get in a good workout before the class started. Well, being the excited little squirrels that we were we ended up getting there at around 5:15pm, which wouldn't have been so bad if the class hadn't been pushed back to 6:45pm. So we had an hour and a half to burn before our class started...no bueno. We decided that it would be a great idea to workout the entire time...no our smartest moments. I ended up doing a mile on the treadmill (walking at 4 MPH), a little over a mile on the elliptical and FIVE miles on the bike. Needless to say, we were hurting by the time it came to go into the Zumba class...

So now for the Zumba class...
This was the first time either Chandler or I had taken a Zumba class. We knew it was going to be a lot of cardio, a lot of dancing around, and pretty much a LOT of us looking like complete white girls. I'm just about the clumsiest person alive, add with that no real rhythme and you've got a train-wreck waiting to happen. Turns out, Chan is right there with me, so it was perfect. We absolutely LOVED the class...there was really only one lady who had any sense of rhythme, but she came in halfway through so it wasn't so bad. If you haven't ever been to a Zumba class, you're supposed to be doing this...
But we were more like this...
Bottom line...we made fools of ourselves...had a blast...and burned all together a little over 1,000 calories!!!
I'd say we were pretty successful!

  1. hahaha. I love the "more like this" picture...I did my first Zumba class when I was in California last summer, and I was the EXACT same way. I would try to stay with it, but when my lack of coordination would get the better of me, I would just freestyle! :)
